How a Slow Day on West Bay Ends at Watermans in Galveston
Most people see Galveston first from the Seawall. They see hotels in a long row and Gulf waves breaking on the sand. Head west, though, and the island gets quiet fast. Keep going past the stilt houses on Stewart Road and even the water changes. West Bay is flat and shallow, and it mostly belongs to people with fishing rods and no particular hurry. That’s where you’ll find Waterman’s in Galveston: a restaurant on one side, a marina on the other, and a dock in between. Here is one easy day there, from an early start to a sunset table.
Why West Bay Feels Different From the Seawall
Out here, the weather makes the plans. Regulars check the wind and the tide before anyone touches a line, and if the answer is “not yet,” they wait. When a summer squall blows through, you’ll see one boater squinting at the radar and two others retelling last week’s fishing story. Someone under the slip roof usually ends up playing a few relaxed rounds at spinanzia casino on their phone until the rain lets up. Then it’s back out.
The island itself shields West Bay from the open Gulf. So the water stays calmer here. It’s shallower too. Near Galveston Island State Park the shoreline breaks up into grass flats and marsh. There’s almost always a heron standing dead still in the shallows, and the anglers are out there for speckled trout and redfish. For many visitors, a slow ride along that shoreline is the entire plan.
“On the bay, the best plans are the loose ones. You pick a direction, watch the water, and let the afternoon decide where it ends.”
Waterman’s Marina Galveston and the Rhythm of a Boat Day
Waterman’s Marina has 120 newly built slips, and every one is covered and lit. They’re tucked into a cove off West Bay, out of the worst of the wind. If you’ve ever climbed onto a boat that sat in the Texas sun all morning (hot seats, hot rails, hot everything), you already know why that roof is a big deal. The marina opens at 6:00 AM daily and shuts at 5:00 PM. Forgot bait? They sell it live, along with fishing and boating gear. Some weekends the docks fill up with events and fishing tournaments.
The restaurant stands right next door, so you can leave the car parked all day. Here is one relaxed way to plan it around both sets of hours.
| Time | Stop | What Happens | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6:00 AM | Waterman’s Marina | Marina opens; pick up live bait and supplies | Head out early while the water is calm |
| Late morning | West Bay flats | Fishing, cruising, or birdwatching near the state park | Bring more water than you expect to need |
| Midday (Fri–Sun) | Waterman’s Restaurant | Lunch on the bay from 11:00 AM | Monday to Thursday, the restaurant opens at 4:00 PM |
| 5:00 PM | Marina | Office closes; the boat goes back in its slip | Start the trip back with time to spare |
| Sunset | Patio or dining room | Dinner facing the water | Book a table ahead on weekends |
What to Bring Aboard
Packing for a day that ends at dinner isn’t quite the same as packing for a quick fishing run. You’ll come off the water hot and tired, sure. The trick is not looking like it. Here’s what we’d throw in the bag:
- Sunscreen (reef-safe if you can find it) and a hat with a real brim
- Water: one bottle per person, then one more
- A thin rain jacket, since squalls come and go
- Something waterproof for your phone and keys
- A clean shirt to change into before dinner
- A valid Texas fishing license if you plan to fish
Reading the Waterman’s Galveston Menu After a Morning on the Water
After hours in the sun, most people walk in very hungry. The Waterman’s Galveston menu is ready for that. Starters include Boudin Balls, Shrimp Besos, and a fresh Citrus Shrimp Ceviche. The Crawfish and Sausage Gumbo and the Lobster Bisque come in a cup or a bowl. Seafood runs from Fish of the Day and Gulf Red Snapper to Shrimp and Grits, with shrimp done grilled, blackened, or fried. If you have seen enough fish for one day, steaks and cheeseburgers are waiting.
Back in 2022, Daily News readers nominated Waterman’s in 18 Reader’s Choice categories. Best Gumbo and Best Hamburgers were on the list, and so was Best Waterfront Dining. Our advice? Order for the kind of day you’ve had.
| If Your Day Was… | Try This | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Long, hot morning on the flats | Citrus Shrimp Ceviche and the Lakeside Salad | Cool, bright, and light |
| Windy, chilly ride back | A bowl of Crawfish and Sausage Gumbo | Warm and filling |
| Big appetite after fishing | Seafood Treasure Chest | Made for sharing |
| Someone skipped seafood | 16oz Prime Ribeye or a Classic Cheeseburger | Hearty plates from the beef side |
| Kids on board | Little Punkins Fried Shrimp or Chicken Strips | Familiar food with a drink included |
For sides, get the Cheesy Grits. Or the Onion Strings. Really, get both and pass them around.
When There’s a Wait for a Table
Summer weekends on the island get packed, and Waterman’s is no exception. Walk in at peak dinner time on a Saturday and you’ll probably wait. A reservation fixes most of that, so book on OpenTable or just call. Groups of eight or more should call first. If you do end up waiting, the setting gives you plenty to do:
- Wander down the docks and see who’s coming in with fish
- Take a stool at the bar (a margarita helps)
- Look for pelicans and herons around the cove
- Check tomorrow’s forecast for another trip out
- Let the kids count boats under the slip roof
- Share photos from the day with your crew
Making the Evening Last at Waterman’s Galveston TX
Waterman’s calls its sunset the most spectacular view on the island. That’s a bold claim on an island full of water views. On a clear evening, though, it’s hard to say they’re wrong. The sky goes orange first, then a soft pink that sort of spills across the bay. Bar or patio, you’ll be facing it.
“A sunset dinner works best when nobody is rushing. Order dessert, let the sky finish its show, and leave the dock lights to guide you home.”
Save room for dessert. Key Lime Pie fits a warm evening. If the breeze has turned cool, go for the Bread Pudding or the Brown Butter Crème Brûlée instead. And there’s no rush. Waterman’s stays open until 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays, and until 9:00 PM the rest of the week.
A good day on West Bay really doesn’t take much. Get up early, keep the plan loose, and know where you’re eating at the end of it. Waterman’s Galveston TX puts all of that at one address on Stewart Road. Your boat stays in the shade, the crew gets fed, and the sky takes care of the rest. So bring some patience and leave the schedule on land. The bay sets the pace out here anyway.
